# Fennick

Fits the way you think.

Writes like a document. Works like a database.

Write paragraphs, outline, or build a table, and mix them on one page. Make your own tags and properties. See anything in more than one way: a page as an outline or as prose, and a set of objects as a table, a board or a calendar. You never have to pick one style.

Document, outliner and database in one app. Your knowledge in a file you own.

Fennick is a notes app. You write long-form text and outlines in the same editor. When you tag a block, it becomes an object with properties (Fennick calls them fields) and stays in your paragraph. It also shows on the tag's page and in every query it matches. Each notebook is a local SQLite file, and sync is optional.

- Status: pre-alpha. Fennick isn't open to new people yet.
- How to get in: join the waitlist at https://getfennick.com/#waitlist. Invites are free, and we send them to small groups.
- Price: the app on your computer is free forever. Sync, the web app and sharing will be paid after the alpha and are free until then. Prices aren't set.
- Who makes it: a small team with no outside investors.
- What works today: the roadmap at https://getfennick.com/roadmap lists what is live in the app today, what is being built, what is next, and what comes after the alpha. New features: https://getfennick.com/changelog.
- Signing in (for people who already have an account): in Fennick, press ⌘K, type "sign in" and press Enter. Sign in is also in Settings, under Account.

## What the alpha includes

1. Paragraphs and outlines on the same page. Every paragraph is a block, and so is every bullet. Tab indents a block under the one above it. You can fold blocks, open any block as its own page, and paste Markdown or rich text with its headings, lists and to-dos intact.
2. Tags, objects and fields. Type a tag such as #book or #task at the end of a sentence. The block becomes an object of that tag and gets the tag's fields, shown after the tag in short form. Field kinds: text, number, date, choice, checkbox, web link, and a relation to another object. Each field can show after the name, before it, or not at all. Fields can hold several values. Tags have templates, and objects can have aliases.
3. A local file. Each notebook is one SQLite file in a folder you choose, with plainly named tables and a readme table (SELECT * FROM readme). It works offline with no account, and Fennick never encrypts it on your device. Optional sync keeps a notebook in step on Mac, iPhone and the web; you can also sync the file with iCloud, Dropbox or Syncthing. Export as Markdown, CSV or JSON. Import Markdown folders, CSV files and exports from other apps.
4. Views, queries and formulas. A view is a way to see anything, not something a tag owns. A set of objects can show as a table, board, list, calendar, gallery or chart, with sort, filter, group and several saved views. A page can show its blocks as an outline, as prose, numbered, or as a checklist. A live query is a block whose results appear under it and update as you write. Rollups count, sum or average related objects. Simple formulas work on an object's own fields.
5. Daily notes. Fennick opens on today's page. Week, month and year pages. Typing @today, @fri or @oct 15 links a block to that day. Date ranges show on every page they cover. Dates can have times and time zones. A repeating task is one task with its whole history. A Tasks page lists overdue, today's and upcoming tasks, and reminders notify at a set time.
6. Agents, with AI optional. During setup you choose No AI, On-device only, or AI allowed; skipping means No AI. Agents connect through an MCP server or an API with a key for each notebook. Blocks an agent writes are marked as its own, and its edits can wait for your approval.
7. History. The Op Log lists every change by every person and agent as a plain sentence, and each page has a version history. "Undo this" reverts one change and keeps later ones. "Restore to here" goes back to a point. Synced notebooks are backed up every night, with a test restore every day.

The alpha also includes: ⌘K to open anything, search with filters, backlinks and unlinked mentions, link previews you can edit, copying a link to a block, a sidebar you can rearrange, tabs, a heading outline in the margin, simple tables, code blocks with syntax colours, transclusion, images and files in blocks, Mac, iPhone and web apps, and a lock with Face ID or a passkey.

## After the alpha

Comments, sharing a notebook with other people, asking AI questions inside the app, plugins and themes, more importers, Windows and Android apps, end-to-end encryption for each notebook, and flags on plans when something they depend on changes.
